Alabama Virtual Library Scavenger Hunt
DIRECTIONS: When an answer is needed, write it on a sheet of
paper.
1. Be sure you are on
the middle school site of the AVL.
2. Click on the star at
the top right of the screen. Name it “AVL.” This will make it appear at the top
of your web browser so you can just click on it to find the AVL easily.
3. Click on “Britannica
Middle School.”
a. Who is the biography
of the day about?
b. Click on “How to’s”
and “Research Paper.” What is this about?
c. What does today’s
daily buzzword mean?
4. Click on “SIRS
Discoverer.”
a. Find an article about
Abraham Lincoln. (hint: you can type his name in the search
bar). What year was he
born?
b. Click on “current events” at the bottom.
Write down the title of one current event article that pulls up.
c. What is one topic that is listed under
“Database Features”?
5. Click on “Kids
Search.”
a. If I wanted to find
an article on exercise, which topic should I click on?
b. Type “tigers” into
the search bar. What is the name of the first article that appears?
c. Type “moon” into the
search bar. Then click on “Photos” under “filter results by.”
Where is the first photo
taken?
6. Click on the “Student
Research Center.”
a. Uncheck all the boxes
except “primary source documents.” Type Eisenhower into
the search box and click
“search.” What is the name of the 3rd article that appears?
b. Name one topic that
is listed under “Top Searches.”
c. What is one way I
could limit my search results? (hint: Look at the box that says
“Limit Search Results.”)
7. Click on “Kids Info
Bit.”
a. Find one interesting
fact about the state of Missouri.
b. Write down how I
could find a chart about the continent Africa.
c. Click on the
dictionary at the top. Type in the word “uninhabited,” and find the
definition. Write down
the definition.
8. Click on any other
place we haven’t looked through. Write down what you think would be the best
thing to look for in that site (what is this site most useful for).
